Job Summary
The Center for Academic Support (CAS) provides academic assistance to students through one-on-one or small group tutoring in-person and online. A writing tutor provide guided assistance to MoWest students for writing assignments from general studies courses as well as some upper-level and graduate courses. This role requires tutors to stay up-to-date on knowledge related to writing, rhetoric, and citation. Additionally, writing tutors assist with light clerical responsibilities including scheduling and documentation of tutoring appointments.
Essential Duties
  • Facilitate one-on-one tutoring sessions in person at the CAS, online via Zoom, or asynchronously via TracCloud for writers at all skill levels across academic disciplines
  • Help students develop strategies for brainstorming, organizing, and revising their writing as well as providing feedback on grammar, structure, clarity, citation, and style
  • Complete required training during the first semester of employment to cover clerical responsibilities, discipline knowledge, course content, and tutoring techniques
  • Operate the CAS front desk, which includes greeting clients, answering phones, logging clients in and out, and other light clerical tasks
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing tutor training to build foundational knowledge of disciplines tutored
  • Maintain accurate session notes and complete required documentation after each appointment
  • Refer students to other campus resources (advising, counseling, ARC, etc.) when appropriate
  • Deliver presentations on tutoring services to classes upon request and attend outreach events to promote the CAS

  • Enrolled at least part-time
  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Recommendation by two MoWest Faculty members
  • Must have earned an A or B in English 104, 108 or ETC 200.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in grammar, mechanics, and college-level writing expectations, and the ability to explain them clearly to others
  • Understanding of the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing) and familiarity with at least one major citation style (APA or MLA)
  • Clear, patient communication skills, including active listening and the ability to ask questions that help writers find their own solutions rather than simply providing answers
  • Ability to give constructive, encouraging feedback without taking over or rewriting a student’s work
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism with students, faculty, and staff
Physical Demands Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.

  • Possible online tutoring.
  • Must have access to a stable internet connection and a device with working camera, microphone and speakers.
