Job Description | The Assistant Dean of Students for Student Engagement & Involvement creates a dynamic student experience with staff dedicated to student development. The Assistant Dean creates and implements a vision, strategic direction, and oversight for student engagement activities/events, student leadership, and fraternity and sorority life. The Assistant Dean of Students will provide student involvement programming that cultivates a positive co-curricular program fostering student engagement, learning, and personal development for a diverse group of learners.
The Assistant Dean of Students will be expected to work with colleagues to create an engagement mode that reinforces MWSUs commitment to student-centered learning communities and preparing individuals for lives of excellence through applied learning. The Assistant Dean of Students reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs-Dean of Students (VPSA-DOS) and will assist with policies, standards, and goals for the department, consistent with the mission and goals of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Lead and cultivate a vibrant student activities and engagement program through the development of co-curricular programming in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students that positively contributes to student success, retention, and to the university’s mission of a student-centered learning community preparing individuals for lives of excellence through applied learning which has a positive impact on retention.
- Coach, advise, and guide registered student organization leaders in conflict resolution, risk management, budget and finance, meeting management, behavior management, and leadership skills, and refer to appropriate university personnel as needed.
- Plan and execute a start of semester (fall/spring) RSO training/orientation.
- Plan, implement, and assess major campus events and traditions, including Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the Student Awards Ceremony.
- Ensure diversity, access, and inclusion are integral to the design, planning, and implementation of all programs and services, marketing materials, and participation opportunities
- Partner with colleagues to provide programming and to support off-campus, commuter, first-generation, and veteran students.
- Oversee the facility request and event coordination process for on-campus and external constituents
- Participate in institutional effectiveness measures, including annual goals, objectives, planning, and assessment of learning outcomes
- Oversee the Division of Student Affairs social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat accounts, etc.
- Maintains event management calendar/schedule and leads weekly check-in meetings for the division.
- Assist division for admissions in the development and implementation of Griffon Orientation “GO”.
- Co-Advises the Student Government Association (SGA)
Supervisory Responsibilities: - Supervise the Director of Student Involvement, the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Director of the Center for Service
- Manage relevant institutional budgets
- Co-Advise Student Government Association (SGA).
- Select, Train, and Supervise department students employees
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: - Assists with monitoring and managing student affairs staff, staff absence requests, and other student-related communication and correspondence.
- Supports activities, workshops, and special events related to department, division, and/or campus.
- Serves on campus committees as assigned.
- Supervises and assigns work to student employees.
- Development/coordination, student leader advising, event/risk management, fiscal management and budget preparation, program evaluation and assessment, group dynamics, conflict management, mediation, and leadership development
- Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments and implement effective courses of action without detailed instructions
- Strong organizational, creative, and innovative capabilities and the ability to successfully implement new initiatives and maximize available resources
- Proficient use of technology, software packages (Microsoft Office Suite), the internet and web-based forms
- Excellent presentation and oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Willingness to work nights and weekends as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Excellent written communication skills with the ability to compose correspondence using correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Must be an enthusiastic team player but also have the ability to work independently
- Calm and helpful manner with all constituents
- Highly organized with multi-tasking capability to manage multiple projects to deadline
- Working familiarity with office equipment/systems
- Must demonstrate professional conduct in dress and manner

Required Qualifications | - Master’s degree in education, leadership, counseling, college student personnel or related field.
- Minimum of three years of professional experience in higher education, including a minimum of two years of experience in one of the following: a) Serving as an advisor of college student organizations, b) Greek letter organizations, or c) Student leadership development programs;
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse Greek-lettered organizations or diverse student organizations (i.e., LGBTQ, multicultural, differently abled, Veterans).
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity in working with a college-aged population or in a college/university environment.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with units in prevention programming or in providing programming for high-risk student populations.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate trainings, workshops, or educational sessions; Demonstrated supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated public relations and marketing experience and use of contemporary communication methods (i.e., social media).
