POSITION PURPOSE:

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Boilers, Plant Air Supply System, CO2 Plant, Cooling Towers and Chiller working schedule determined to be most beneficial to provide reliable operations, while supporting the policies, goals, and objectives of the Company.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

  1. Constantly review the operation of the boiler, plant air system, CO2 plant cooling towers and chiller to monitor production and quality, anticipating and solving problems in a timely manner, and identifying opportunities for improvement. Understand all piping and valves, what they are and where they go.
  1. Communicate and work with Team Leads on steam, chiller, cooling tower, and compressed air issues.
  1. The Utility Technician should have a good understanding of water chemistry and the equipment used to supply the plant boilers and cooling tower systems with water. The Utility Technician should also make needed adjustments to keep water chemistry in ranges set by water treatment service providers.
  1. Understand and implement start-up and shut-down procedures for the safe and efficient operation of the boilers, plant air systems, CO2 plant, chiller, and cooling towers. Assist with rewriting SOP’s as needed to stay current with changes. The Utility Operator should also be able to do COA’s on the CO2.
  1. Complete all safety and plant training as required by the company and set specifically by the supervisor. Complete annual continuing education to maintain current City Boilers License.
  1. Maintain accurate electronic records of boilers and other equipment on a daily, weekly, and/or monthly basis, as required.
  1. Communicate directly with QA/QC laboratory to ensure effective participation in the implementation of QA policies and procedures.
  1. Work directly with the maintenance department to coordinate maintenance and repair work in process areas, utilizing the computerized maintenance management system. Set to establish and perform all current predictive and preventative maintenance PM’s, update as needed.
  1. Monitor the KPI’s to insure optimal performance on all equipment. Immediately report any deviations.
  1. Work in a safe manner following OSHA and plant safety policies at all times.
  1. Responsible for understanding all environmental permits as they pertain to areas of responsibility and the surrounding grounds.
  1. Participate in programs and procedures required to ensure plant cleanliness.
  1. Monitor use and inventories of process chemicals and supplies. Provide input for more efficient operations.
  1. Responsible for production of safe food and adherence to internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1st Class Boiler License or technical degree/certification required

Required Knowledge & Experience:

  • 1-3 years’ experience in the operation of a high pressure boiler preferred

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and work effectively with the plant’s Distributed Control System (DCS)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION:

Assigned shift; up to three 12-hour shifts one week; four 12-hour shifts the second week. Significant time will be spent in the plant. All types of chemical industry equipment are used in the plant to include, but not limited to fermentation vessels, jet cookers, agitators, mixing and milling equipment, distillation columns, centrifuges and distributive control systems. May be exposed to loud noises, wet and humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, extreme hot and cold depending on weather conditions. Must be able to climb ladders and work at elevations of 175 feet.
