JOB TITLE: Aquatic Intern
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities

SALARY: $19.25 hourly

Job Summary
An internship is available in the Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities Department, Aquatic Program. Under the supervision of the Aquatic/Recreation Manager, the intern will have the opportunity to explore various aspects of an aquatic program, while gaining the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to work in the aquatic field.
Through this internship possible Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting with interviewing and hiring seasonal staff.
  • Assisting with preparation to open pools for the season.
  • Executing excellent customer service representation.
  • Assisting in opening and closing pools.
  • Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of pool area and facility.
  • Assisting in the supervision of swimmers and their activities.
  • Maintaining an attentive lookout for potential accidents in the swimming pool and surrounding facility and appropriately corrects any problems.
  • Assisting in monitoring the water slides for proper patron use and dispatch swimmers.
  • Performing rescues and first aid when necessary.
  • Filing any accident and/or rescue reports as they occur.
  • Ensuring front gate is monitored at all times.
  • Attending required in-service training.
  • Assisting in the administration of water testing and documentation.
  • Assisting with the operation of the filtration/chlorination system.
  • Assisting with the daily accounting of all incoming funds, passes and special rates.
  • Assisting with the daily cash reporting and daily deposits.
  • Performing as a Lifeguard or Pool Attendant as needed.
  • Assisting with the scheduling and staff training as needed.
  • Assisting with program development and implementation.
  • Assisting with the supervision of pool attendant and lifeguard staff.
  • Performs all other duties associated with daily operations.

City employees (Interns) shall conduct themselves in a professional manner and shall exhibit and extend such professional conduct appropriate for the circumstances to those with whom they come into contact both internally and externally during the performance of their duties. Examples of professional conduct include, but not limited to, being communicative, informative, fair, honest and respectful.
Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skills in effective operation of the pool and swimmers.
  • Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, first aid, CPR, AED and lifeguarding or willing to complete a training program. Current certification cards must be presented before employment.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Conformance to the basic standards of performance and behavior.
  • Must be available to work irregular hours and at various intervals, including holidays, weekends and evening hours.
  • Must be able to work well with people of all ages and dispositions.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • MRPA student membership preferred.
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Materials and equipment used in rescue procedure. First aid supplies. Supplies used in maintenance and cleanliness of the pool. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Work is performed in an outside setting and extreme heat. Must have the ability to routinely lift objects weighing as much as 20 pounds, occasionally lift objects weighing as much as 50 pounds or assist in lifting objects in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purpose. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested off and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
Education
Applicants must be seeking a Graduate or Undergraduate degree in Recreation, Sports, Fitness, Physical Education, Physical Therapy or related field in order to be considered for this position.
All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
Any job offer made by the City is contingent upon the applicant passing the drug screening and background check.
