| JOB TITLE: Fire Captain *PROMOTIONAL/INTERNAL ONLY* DEPARTMENT: Fire DIVISION: Suppression SALARY: $76,017.0694/YR CLOSING: December 26th, 2025 Job Summary/Scope Supervises and directs all phases of emergency and non-emergency operations for assigned fire company. Command a fire company in executing fire suppression and fire prevention activities, rescue operations and emergency medical operations to protect and safeguard lives and property. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire stations and equipment. Assumes and maintains the role of incident commander when first company at scene, until officially relieved. Regularly assigns and checks the work of others. Provides direction and guidance and maintains the flow of work. No budgetary responsibilities. Supervisory Responsibility Integral to the position of Captain is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting, and, if necessary, disciplining. Material and Equipment Directly Used Use a variety of equipment including fire prevention and suppression equipment, emergency medical equipment, fire protective equipment, hand and power tools, communication equipment and other related equipment. Operation of various fire trucks and other motor vehicles. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required. Working Environment/Physical Requirements This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work frequently speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, swift water, confined space and high traffic stress; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's Degree in Fire Science preferred. All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
