Job Summary/Scope

Repairs and maintains police vehicles at regular intervals and as required. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all types of repairs on trucks, cars, mowers, utility vehicles, specialty vehicles and any other department equipment.
  • Performs tire repair and installs new tires.
  • Changes oil, grease and performs tune-ups.
  • Responds to service calls and attempts repairs as necessary in the field.
  • Deals with vendors and arranges to pick up vehicles as needed for repairs.
  • Required to be on-call and respond to emergencies as needed
  • Fabricates and welds equipment

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skills in working with related power and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of the various systems of an automobile such as a motor, transmission, fuel systems, electrical, drive train and specialized police equipment.
  • Ability to repair problems correctly and quickly.
  • Knowledge of computer command control, high energy ignition, electronic control module and sensors.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • One to three years prior experience in related field required.

Materials and Equipment Directly Used

Operates a variety of equipment including hand tools used in the maintenance of police vehicles. Battery charger, air tools, tire changers, and various other equipment as necessary. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirement

Work is mainly performed in a shop environment. Some outside work with exposure to weather extremes. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Also requires such physical activities as climbing, stooping, kneeling and crawling. Must be able to operate equipment with dexterity. Exposed to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, heat, cold, noise, fumes and hazardous materials and chemicals. Must have the ability to routinely lift objects weighing as much as thirty pounds, occasionally lift objects weighing as much as 75 pounds or assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be required of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.
All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
