JOB TITLE: Environmental Technician

SALARY: $45,897.00 yearly/ $22.06586 hourly

Job Summary/Scope
Manages the operation and maintenance of a landfill gas extraction system that provides fuel for a waste to energy facility. Performs duties for other environmental monitoring systems at the landfill. Maintains records necessary for compliance with permits or systems. Assists the Superintendent with reporting and correspondence to state and federal regulatory agencies. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages a gas extraction system that balances wells to optimize gas collection and protect against offsite migration and fires
  • Maintains well fields
  • Operates a gas analyzer to record and balance well field
  • Calibrates meters daily to ensure accurate readings
  • Downloads testing information into computer system to document findings
  • Performs gas testing in buildings with a combustible gas indicator in compliance with Part 70 Air Permit
  • Develops specifications for specific work items and equipment purchases
  • Collects and transports storm water samples
  • Performs evacuation of groundwater wells and assists with groundwater sampling
  • Performs and documents waste sorts
  • Maintains records necessary for compliance with permits or systems
  • Performs random waste screening
  • Prepares correspondence to state and federal regulatory agencies regarding the environmental monitoring operations at the landfill

  • Ability to work outside under a variety of weather conditions and temperatures
  • Skills in basic survey techniques
  • Skills and abilities in reading and understanding maps, blue prints and construction plans
  • Valid driver’s license

Materials and Equipment Directly Used
Uses an assortment of equipment including a variety of gas analyzers, gas and differential pressure testing equipment, gas meters, GPS; computer, various software applications, printers, copiers and other office equipment. There may be times when the use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and walking, frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or
crawling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Education
High school diploma and one year or more of related work-related experience. Associates degree in Engineering Technology or Environmental Sciences preferred.
