POSITION TITLE: SIMR Maintenance Laborer (Seasonal)
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Public Works & Transportation/Streets
SALARY: $15.45/hourly

Job Summary/Scope:

Perform manual labor in maintenance and construction for the City’s Street Infrastructure Maintenance and Repair Division. May operate heavy equipment as needed. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists with asphalt repairs
  • Assists with the construction of concrete forms and performs concrete finish work.
  • Required to be on call and/or carry a pager and responds to emergencies as needed.
  • Cleans sewer lines and inlets.
  • Assists in repairing, rebuilding, and replacing inlets and manholes.
  • Operates jack hammer, dump truck.
  • Cuts brush and weeds.
  • Trims trees and branches as needed. Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Drives snowplow and or salt spreader as needed.
  • Hand paints crosswalk and assist with traffic control devices
  • Occasionally work with inmate crew
  • Performs all other related duties assigned.
Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to follow oral instructions and carry out assigned tasks.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Skills in building forms, pouring and finishing concrete.
  • Knowledge of City geography and street location.
  • Knowledge of proper barricading & traffic control procedures

Material and Equipment Directly Used:

Shovels, jack hammer, brush and weed control equipment, cement mixer, small electrical and air tools, and snow blower. Use of concrete, sand, cement, mortars, bricks, blocks. Drive and operate trucks and other wheeled vehicles. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

Work is performed under a variety of conditions ranging from confined spaces, large excavations, sewer odors, exposure to sanitary sewage, vermin, extreme cold, heat, wind, wet, and occasionally in live traffic. Must be able to stand for long periods and operate equipment with dexterity. Must have the ability to routinely lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds, occasional lifting objects weighing as much as 80 pounds or assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds and pulling loads up to 300 pounds. Must be able to regularly pull a charged sewer cleaning hose up to 50’ and occasionally several hundred feet across fences and through various types of terrain. Must have the ability to regularly assemble, install & disconnect 5 to 6 sections of vacuum tubing weighing up to 120 pounds. Work involves occasional frequent climbing, bending, squatting and reaching. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and must be approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required or must be able to obtain within 6 months. 6 months to one year experience in a related field preferred.
