Identification:
POSITION TITLE: Senior Auto Mechanic
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities
DIVISION: Park Maintenance

Job Summary:
Repairs trucks, cars, tractor, mowers, and all motorized equipment. Rebuilds engines, transmissions, rear ends and fabricates tools and equipment.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Integral to the position of Senior Auto Mechanic is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and, if necessary, disciplining.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs and schedules preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles, changes oil, grease and assists with tune-ups.
  • Performs small engine repairs on trucks, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, weed eaters and other related equipment.
  • Responds to service calls and repairs equipment in the field.
  • Fixes and installs new tires.
  • Fabricates and welds equipment.
  • Locates and picks up repair parts for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs bodywork and painting on vehicles and equipment.
  • May be required to work with or supervising of inmates.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Employee Behavior and Conduct:

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Skills in welding, acetylene torches, electrical troubleshooting, hydraulics, fabricating equipment and tools, operating equipment hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gas engines, basic operation of hydraulic equipment, basic knowledge of electrical units.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, troubleshoot equipment in shop as well as in the field and make preventive maintenance sheet.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) required or must have ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • State of Missouri Inspector’s license preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must attend a work release supervisor training class annually.
Material and Equipment Directly Used:
Use of various hand tools, power tools, equipment used for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining vehicles and equipment. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Majority of work is performed in an indoor garage as well as an outdoor environment, where weather conditions can vary from extreme heat and cold, with high levels of dust, dirt, fumes, and noise. Physical activity includes prolonged standing, bending, stooping, lifting, walking and uses arms and hands frequently. Must have the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 to 75 pounds and assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Five or more years of prior experience required to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
