Identification: JOB TITLE: Firefighter DEPARTMENT: Fire DIVISION: Suppression SALARY: $49,663.88/Annually CLOSING: Open until filled Job Summary/Scope Engages in fire suppression and fire prevention activities as a member of a fire company, to protect and safeguard lives and property. Performs rescue and First Responder medicalassistance on a regular basis. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire stations and equipment. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities. Material and Equipment Directly Used Uses a variety of equipment including fire suppression equipment, emergency medical equipment, fire protection equipment, hand and power tools and communication equipment and other related equipment. Operation of various fire trucks and other motor vehicles. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required. Working Environment/Physical Requirements Work is performed in indoor and outdoor settings under adverse and dangerous conditions and in the presence of extreme temperatures. Exposure to various hazards including elevated noise levels, vibrations from fire hoses, toxic fumes, odors, limited ventilation, hazardous materials, chemicals, body fluids including blood, hot fire gases, chilling, soaking, overheating, dust, dirt and hazards of fighting fires in general. Exposed to diesel fumes from fire trucks on a regular basis inside and outside the fire house. Visual acuity and color perception are a must. This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and high stress traffic conditions; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in Fire Science preferred. All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
