Job Summary/ Scope
Equipment Operator II, Traffic, is primarily responsible for signing, striping and all pavement markings. Installs and replaces all regulatory, informational, and warning signs utilizing a wide variety of hand and power tools. Operates equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various traffic control devices including but not limited to dump truck, high loader, tractor mower, compressor, jackhammer and snow removal equipment. Limited supervisory and no budgetary responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibility
Integral to the position of Equipment Operator II is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and if necessary, disciplining.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • OPERATES mobile pavement striping truck, walk behind paint stripers, and hand paints pedestrian crossings, etc. with the use of stencils.
  • OPERATES dump trucks, equipment, machinery, saws, routers, jackhammers, and air compressor.
  • TRANSPORTS equipment and workers and hauls materials in an efficient manner.
  • OPERATES snow removal equipment
  • MANUFACTURES and REFURBISHES various traffic signs using sign making equipment.
  • MAINTAINS records of work accomplished daily.
  • REQUIRED to be on-call on rotating shifts and/or carry a pager and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • INSTALLS and REPLACES all regulatory, informational, and warning signs utilizing a wide variety of hand and power tools.
  • SETS UP daily closures for routine maintenance and repair projects.
  • SETS UP emergency closures for floods, accidents, fires, hazmat spills, police incidents, and other emergency situations requiring traffic control.
  • SETS UP weekend closures for City-sponsored parades and other public events.
  • INVESTIGATES and, if needed, ABATES reports of sight-distance issues.
  • SERVES as crew leader in absence of foreman

Other Duties and Responsibilities
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • VALID Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement required.
  • ABILITY to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision
  • SKILLS in operating equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various traffic control devices.
  • KNOWLEDGE of the rules and regulations as set out in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • SKILLS in Microsoft Office products.
  • KNOWLEDGE of applicable City, State and Federal rules and regulations
  • ABILITY to learn applicable City Ordinances
  • CERTIFICATION with work zone safety through the International Municipal Signal Association or the American Traffic Services Association preferred.

Materials and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of equipment, including dump truck, snowplow, jack hammer, backhoe, high loader, mobile pavement striping truck, walk behind stripers, arc welder, oxygen & acetylene torches, tractor mower, chainsaw and other tools directly related to the maintenance of the various traffic control devices. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Work is performed under a variety of conditions ranging from extreme cold, heat, wind and wet. Majority of work will be performed in live traffic. Must be able to stand for long periods and operate equipment with dexterity. Must have the ability to routinely lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds, occasionally lift objects weighing as much as 90 pounds or assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Work involves climbing, bending, squatting and reaching. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required or must be able to obtain within 6 months. One to three years of experience in related field preferred. Six months to one-year prior experience in related field required.
