POSITION TITLE: Equipment Operator II

Job Summary
Operates medium to heavy machinery in the maintenance of the parks and parkways.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates tractors with hydraulic lifts, arm reach mowers, or other attached accessories.
  • Operates such equipment as a bobcat with all attachments, backhoe, high loader, mowers, and polecat.
  • Cuts and removes dead or hazardous trees.
  • Removes snow and ice from park facilities.
  • Trims trees and hauls trash and debris to the landfill.
  • Assists on construction projects, new facilities, and renovation of existing facilities.
  • Supervises prison work release inmates occasionally.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Help in the general maintenance of the park system.
  • Assists in delivery of equipment for city-sponsored events and projects.
  • Trains Seasonal Laborers.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skills in effective operation of necessary equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety requirements associated with equipment operation.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights up to 70’.
  • Ability to ride and operate tractors and mowers for extended periods.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Must attend a work release supervisor training class annually
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) is required or must have the ability to obtain within 3 months of employment.
  • One or more years of related work experience required.
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck, and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks. There may be times when use of a personal vehicle may be required.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting where weather conditions can vary from extreme heat and cold, with high levels of dust, dirt, fumes and noise. Physical activity includes prolonged standing, bending, stooping, lifting, walking and uses arms and hands frequently. Must have the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 to 75 pounds and assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
l applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
