Job Summary/Scope
To assist the Golf Superintendent in all aspects of golf course maintenance, act as a weekend supervisor, do general construction work, apply fertilizers/chemicals, and keep course manicured.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs irrigation repairs as needed along the course including plumbing and electrical. Assists in managing water controllers and performs hand watering to greens, tees, and fairways.
  • Performs duties to keep course manicured such as mowing greens, fairways, tees, and rough; dead tree removal/storm damage, seeding/aerating areas on golf course, changing pins, weed eating, and raking sand traps.
  • Performs spraying of chemicals as well as applying fertilizers to all areas of turf.
  • Acts as supervisor to work crews on daily and weekend basis.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs general carpentry and plumbing repairs to clubhouse and maintenance facilities as needed. Builds and repairs fence and blows out water lines as needed.
  • Operates bobcat, backhoe, dump truck to reconstruct areas on course such as rebuilding tees, filling in holes, digging water leaks.
  • Performs frost and course checks and reports to clubhouse on playability of the golf course.
  • Performs routine fluid and filter changes to equipment, sharpen/change mower blades, reels, and bed knives. Makes part order lists, orders/picks up parts as needed during peak season as well as off season/winter months. Maintain equipment records.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skills in operating golf course related equipment as well as bobcat, dump truck and backhoe.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry/plumbing; hand tools (manual and electric); basic repair to golf course equipment and machinery. Knowledge of light construction trade.
  • Ability to follow instructions and carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to make decisions in absence of Golf Superintendent.
  • Ability to maintain records on equipment and troubleshoot minor breakdowns on equipment.
  • Ability to work with general public and users.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicator license within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to maintain records on application of chemicals and fertilizers.

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including power & hand tools, golf course specialty equipment/mowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, push mower, edger, top dresser, aerator, seeder, cup setter, rakes, shovels, concrete mixer, bobcat, loader, dump truck, backhoe and other related equipment. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires lifting, frequently requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. One or more years’ experience in lawn care maintenance or golf course maintenance preferred to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
