POSITION TITLE: Equipment Operator IV

Job Summary/Scope
Operates heavy equipment for the City of St. Joseph and assists in the performance of duties under the direction of their assigned supervisor. No budgetary responsibilities. No supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates one or more of (but not limited to) the following: roll off dumpster truck, dump truck, vactor truck, backhoe, front end loader, telehandler, forklift, tanker truck, tractor and skid loader.
  • Trains (as assigned) in the operation of equipment such as skid loader, dump truck, tanker truck.
  • Hauls loads of grit, sludge cake, pellets, and trash to landfill.
  • Hauls water and sludge from Rosecrans treatment plant to the main wastewater treatment plant.
  • Empties grit, trash dumpsters, and F.O.G. dumpster.
  • Operates snowplow in snow removal at plant and pump and lift stations.
  • Assists (as required) mechanics with maintenance when assigned equipment is inoperable.
  • Cleans and performs general maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Performs street sweeping at wastewater plant and pump stations as required for MS4 stormwater permit.
  • Hauls rock and gravel and grades roads as needed for pump and lift stations
  • Assists with mowing duties at wastewater plant and pump stations

Other Duties and Responsibilities
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Skills in operation of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to carry out work assignments.
  • Must have a valid Class A CDL with tanker, air, trailer. Additional endorsements may be required to meet departmental needs.
  • 3-5 years of prior experience in related field required.

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Uses a variety of equipment including, but not limited to chip spreaders, tractor trailers, truck-mounted snow blowers, vactor trucks, backhoes, bucket trucks, snowplow, dump truck, front end loader, telehandler, forklift, tanker truck, skid loader. Uses hand and power tools as required. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Work is performed under a variety of conditions ranging from office with controlled environment, to outside tasks performed under a range of extreme weather conditions of cold, heat, windy and wet. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and operate equipment with dexterity. Work involves bending, stooping, climbing and reaching. Must have ability to routinely lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Occasionally lift objects weighing as much as 75 pounds or assist in lifting objects in excess of 75 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required or must be able to obtain GED within 120 days of employment.
All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
