Job Summary/Scope
Assists the Golf Course Superintendent in directing and managing the technical work associated with the care, maintenance, playing conditions, and daily operation of the golf course. In the absence of the Superintendent, the Assistant assumes responsibility for daily operations, staff scheduling, and course preparation. This position actively participates in chemical/fertilizer applications, irrigation management, and equipment operation.

Supervisory Responsibility
Assists the Superintendent in leading, scheduling, and supervising maintenance staff. Responsible for fostering a productive team environment by coaching, training, guiding, and evaluating crew members in proper turf management practices and safe equipment operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Schedules, assigns, and supervises daily tasks for the maintenance crew to ensure optimal playing conditions.
  • Monitors turf health, soil moisture levels, and pest pressures; reports findings directly to the Superintendent to help determine agronomic treatments.
  • Calibrates, mixes, and safely applies fertilizers and pesticides in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; maintains accurate application logs.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and repairs the golf course irrigation system, including heads, valves, controllers, and piping.
  • Performs routine course setup duties, including cutting cups, setting tee markers, and monitoring playing surfaces.
  • Trains staff on the safe and proper operation of all golf course equipment and implements safety protocols.
  • Assists in overseeing special projects, such as drainage installation, sodding, and landscape renovations.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe maintenance facility and chemical storage area.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with routine equipment maintenance and grinding/sharpening of mowers when needed.
  • Performs general course cleanup, debris removal, and hand-watering as environmental conditions dictate.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent or department leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the tools, methods, and practices used in professional turfgrass management.
  • Knowledge of safe chemical and fertilizer handling, mixing, calibration, and application techniques.
  • Familiarity with standard golf course irrigation system operations and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to effectively lead, schedule, motivate, and direct a diverse seasonal crew.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff, management, and the public.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and operational priorities.

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Uses a variety of vehicles and turf equipment ranging from trucks, utility vehicles, tractors, specialty mowers, and related golf course maintenance and construction equipment. Hand tools, including manual and electric. Office equipment such as a computer, modern turf management/irrigation software, a telephone, a hand radio, and a calculator.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, bending, and reaching with hands and arms. Frequently requires operating machinery in outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, and repetitive motions are required.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Two to three years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance preferred, with demonstrated leadership or crew leader experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of a Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License (Ornamental and Turf) or the ability to acquire one within six months of employment.
