Responsibilities

Purpose of Position

This experienced (4+ years) Manufacturing Engineer will support Altec Creedmoor Division’s Plant 24C, which specializes in the manufacture of composite (fiberglass) and steel components for utility truck mounted aerial device assemblies manufactured on site in downstream plants. The Candidate is developing leadership and technical skills necessary to have technical oversight within Altec’s manufacturing operations. The Candidate will function as hands-on continuous improvement leader, project manager, and manufacturing process technical expert in this high-visibility role. Possible future growth paths for this manufacturing engineer could be in Manufacturing Engineering Supervision, Operations Management, or Operations Support leadership.

Manufacturing Engineer Scope of Work

Design Intent

• Ensures manufacturing is building products in conformance to current engineering documentation
• Reviews the design of components and parts for design-for-manufacturability
• Leads the integration of new designs and products into Manufacturing

Production Planning & Execution

• Monitors costs, manpower efficiency, machine capability, space utilization, etc. and recommends revisions in manufacturing processes to ensure capacity aligns with demand.
• Directly supports the focus factory and its team on site.
• Lead regular operations team meetings and improvement efforts focused on Quality, Safety, 5S, and Environmental Compliance

Lean Manufacturing

• Knowledgeable about Lean Manufacturing – candidate trains, coaches, and implements best practices.
• Acts as a continuous improvement leader, owning value streams and driving measurable gains in safety, quality, delivery, and cost through varying complexity and duration projects.
• Leads Rapid Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) Events to remove bottlenecks from the value stream.
• Acts as a change agent.

Project Management

• Brings structure and systems to ambiguous scenarios to strategically identify paths forward with some guidance from Manager.
• Leads and executes Capital projects (CAPEX) through all phases – Need Analysis, Equipment Specification, Layout Optimization, Cost Justification, Procurement, Installation, and Production Support
• Organizes and manages information involving budgets, schedules, timelines, project Gantt charts, and potential technical challenges
• Ownership in everything they do

Technical Process Oversight

• Systematically solves complex problems with many variables, including human, using best engineering practices
• Performs root cause analysis on quality non-conformances
• Designs and improves manufacturing processes, including but not limited to:
  • CNC machinery and industrial automation
  • Composites – open & closed molding, filament winding, adhesives
  • Machining, grinding, and sanding - material removal in composites and steel
  • Sprayed paint and coatings
  • Liquid chemical processes and associated EH&S considerations
  • General Manufacturing – Fabrication & Assembly
  • Welding
• Designs solutions for factory improvements using CAD software:
  • SolidWorks
  • AutoCAD / Draftsight
• Codes and troubleshoots programs on production machines via:
  • MasterCAM, SolidCAM
  • G-Code
• Performs data analysis and creates new tools for production team
  • MS Office Suite
  • MS PowerBI, PowerApps, Power Automate

Team Collaboration

• Works often with production associates and production leadership forming strong collaborative relationships
• Works interdepartmentally to coordinate with other teams on business needs
• Advocates for the production team as voice of manufacturing
• Mentors less experienced engineers and supervise engineering co-ops.
• May directly supervise hourly continuous improvement technician(s).
• Interfaces directly with Suppliers and occasionally Customers
• Supports Altec’s Operations, Sales, and Service with Team Work, Continuous Improvement, & Customer Satisfaction mentality

Education Requirements

• ABET EAC-certified Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Does not include Engineering Technology degrees
  • Preferred disciplines, but not limited to
    • Mechanical & Industrial Engineers
    • Composite & Chemical Engineers
    • Aerospace & Material Science Engineers

OR

• Master of Science in Engineering from a college that offers ABET EAC-certified BS degrees

OR

• Active PE license in the United States

Experience Requirements

Internal candidates:

• Minimum of four (4) years’ Altec full-time experience, 2 of which must be after meeting the above education requirements
  • Applicable Masters counts as one year of experience.
  • External engineering experience, post engineering degree, counts 1 for 1 towards the experience requirement
  • ***Co-op, Intern, Temp experience does not count towards the requirements

External candidates:

• Minimum four (4) years’ experience in an engineering role after meeting the above education requirements
  • Applicable Masters counts as one year of experience.

• Must be willing to travel up to 25% of the time, potentially on short notice, which may include flying

  • Welding
• CAD/CAM Software experience:
  • SolidWorks – proficiency strongly preferred
  • AutoCAD / Draftsight – desired
  • MasterCAM, SolidCAM – desired
  • G-Code – desired
• Lean Manufacturing Experience
