Responsibilities
*1st Shift Position
POSITION SUMMARY: Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, fit and assemble parts to make and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools, and design fixtures using Solidworks.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow all safety regulations for the individual as well as other employees, including keeping the work area clean and in orderly condition as well as wearing all appropriate safety attire for the job that is being performed.
- Design fixtures using Solidworks.
- Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools or assemblies.
- Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
- Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
- Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
- File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together.
- Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
- Conduct test runs with completed tools and parts to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
- Inspect finished tools for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
- Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
- Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
- Perform small weld tasks.
- Perform all duties assigned by supervisor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work in an environment that is not environmentally controlled daily, including very hot conditions in the summer months and little heat in the winter. Work with hazardous equipment and in hazardous conditions on a daily basis. Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including earplugs, safety glasses and/or goggles, steel toe boots/shoes, occasional face shield, and gloves.
Basic Qualifications
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years experience.
TOOLS:
Various measuring tools such as calipers, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, sockets.
EQUIPMENT/MACHINES:
Welding machinery, mills, saws, grinders.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Basic computer knowledge and awareness of SolidWorks computer software. Ability to read and understand blueprints, mathematical knowledge (geometry), basic welding skills, advanced machining skills, mechanically inclined, critical thinking skills (must be able to picture a finished product before beginning).
